David joined Cowan Architects in 2006, becoming a Director in 2018. He is Chartered RIBA Architect working in the UK with a focus on developer residential, homeowner residential, inclusive design and residential care.

With an overlay of knowledge and experience in inclusive design, sustainability and conservation, David has a broad experience across many sectors including developer residential, home-owner private clients, social housing, care homes and nursing homes, commercial, leisure and master-planning with project values ranging from £50k to £15m.

He approaches each job by working closely with clients to ensure their design requirements are fully understood and met and he takes pride in a professional, practical and personal approach. David’s dual discipline degree provides a good basis of planning knowledge, particularly permitted development, which has proven valuable on many projects where he has been responsible to securing planning permissions on difficult sites and prior approval where planning may otherwise be impossible.

When working with developer clients, David excels in creating efficient and cost effect designs that offer best value for the client whilst achieving exciting designs that appeal to their target market.

Working closely with charities such as The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability, mcch and Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for disabled people, David has designed specialist residential accommodation, and supporting therapy spaces for people with cognitive, behavioural and mental health needs as well as profound physical disabilities. He has also been responsible for the design and delivery of nursing and residential care for elderly residents, including EMI and dementia accommodation, with projects spanning the private, public and charity sectors.

David has a keen interest and understanding in sustainability, particularly the fabric first approach, and endeavours to achieve best value for the client both during construction and in the long-term running of the building.

A track record of working on historic buildings has also resulted an interest in heritage projects, both from a conservation perspective and also creating new and contemporary designs in historically significant settings.

He is a member of The Green Register, having completed The Green Register’s Sustainable Building & Services course and Sustainable Building & Services Masterclass, the culmination of which provides RIBA advanced CPD status in sustainable design.

Away from the office he is a keen cyclist and enjoys 5-a-side Monday night football, rugby (now watching rather than playing) and long walks in the Weald where he lives.

David is based in our East Grinstead Office.
