The brief was for a completely new, purpose-built doctors’ surgery fit-out in Lewisham.
The GP practice had been operating from a converted basement which, despite past alteration, was unable to offer the number of consulting rooms, treatment room and the general level of accommodation acceptable by current standards.
The new facility was designed taking into account the needs of the staff and requirements of the PCT. The surgery is situated in a densely populated area, on a busy thoroughfare, and opens directly off the street. Much attention was paid to creating a reception area that was welcoming and friendly, whilst safe for staff and patients. The consulting rooms were accessed off a discreet corridor in the heart of the building engineering a greater feeling of privacy.
The waiting room was zoned to include a children’s play area as well as quieter areas for those waiting to see GP’s and other practitioners. A number of dedicated counselling and treatment rooms were provided in the new facility that were a revelation to staff that had formerly jostled for space in the old facility.
The surgery plays a key role in the community it serves and it hosts art exhibitions with a health and well-being theme that complement its medical function.
