About This Project

A new development of seven one and two bedroom flats on an existing brownfield site, incorporating basement car parking.

Cowan Architects was commissioned to design and secure Planning Permission for this new development, while also ensuring that it was easy and economical to construct.

The site presented numerous challenges as it was not only sloping but the space was exceptionally tight with fire and construction access issues. In order to make the building fit in with its surroundings, the development was cut into the hillside and offered a basement car park with contiguous piling and a transfer slab. The building above was of a timber frame construction with a mixture of brick and timber cladding, so close coordination with the timber frame specialist was required in order to meet both Building Regulations standards and Robust Details.

The working drawings package was put together using Autodesk Revit LT software as part of a company-wide migration towards using BIM (Building Information Technology), which proved very useful in not only visualising the details as we went, but also helped to identify and eliminate any potential difficulties on site.
