The Nyetimber Estate is the largest vineyard in the UK, with 438 acres under vine, and it is the only one to produce premium sparkling wine exclusively from estate-grown fruit. Their headquarters are in West Chiltington and Cowan Architects were consulted regarding various works to the administrative buildings, including converting the barn to provide additional office accommodation.
The building is a typical Sussex oak framed aisled barn with the east end constructed in Cold Waltham sandstone with galletting. The frame sits on a sandstone plinth and is roofed in hand-made clay peg tiles.
At some point the past a part of the interior of the building had been fitted out in a “faux” traditional style using oak with plaster infill, with an area of uncompleted mezzanine floor addition, while the remaining third of the barn had lain unconverted. The alterations had not been sanctioned by the Planning Department.
Cowan Architect’s scheme allowed for those areas which had already been in part converted to be strengthened to allow for office loadings, while extending the unconverted areas by converting in a non-intrusive manner to provide additional ground floor and mezzanine floor office space. Negotiations with the Planning and Conservation officers at Horsham District Council were key to obtaining approval.
