Cowan Architects offer a full range of specialist architectural services for the repair and alteration of historic buildings, as well as the design of new buildings and extensions in historic settings. Conservation work has been an important part of the Practice since its foundation 35 years ago, and our highly experienced team provide a stable base for well-designed and meticulously detailed projects.
We sit on the border between East and West Sussex, within easy reach of Surrey, Kent and London. Our locality is important to us, and over the last four decades we have put our local conservation knowledge into good use at a range of notable buildings including Standen, Bateman’s, Scotney Castle and Sackville College. Recent local heritage works include at Worth Church and Balcombe Place. Our rigorous approach has produced many satisfied clients and our work has achieved awards for the excellence of its design and craftsmanship.
Our team hold accreditations at the highest industry levels as RIBA SCA (Specialist Conservation Architect) and AABC (Architect Accredited in Building Conservation), demonstrating our ability in building conservation. We also support the SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) Sussex committee, sit on the Chichester DAC (Diocesan Advisory Committee) and act as Specialist Advisors to the National Trust regarding Conservation Architecture.
Our office is based in the Grade II listed Old Stone House in East Grinstead, which we repaired and adapted in 2016. It was subsequently Highly Commended by the Sussex Heritage Trust in their awards of the same year.
