Cowan Architects Launches Cowan Eco Design with Passivhaus Designer and Retrofit Innovator Mark Elton
Cowan Architects has launched new architectural studio, Cowan Eco Design, in response to growing interest in both low energy buildings and refurbishment, coupled with the desire to move the practice’s expertise in this direction. The initiative will be led by Mark Elton, who joins the practice to build on Cowan’s track record in the residential and healthcare sectors. He brings with him over 20 years’ experience in sustainable architecture and will be responsible for developing a portfolio in Passivhaus design and low carbon retrofit projects. Mark will be at the CIH South East Regional Conference in Brighton tomorrow, 8th March and Eco Build on Wednesday 9th March.
“Cowan Architects has established itself over 33 years with a solid client base and reputation in residential care homes and housing, including a particular expertise in inclusive design” says Mark. “I think there is a good correlation between these sectors and the health and well-being benefits of the Passivhaus approach.”
Aside from sustainable new-build schemes, Mark is recognised for his work with previous practices on ground-breaking social housing retrofit projects. These include the Edward Woods estate, which features in the LSE study, ‘High Rise Hope’, Parkview Hub, which featured in the recent DCLG review into solid wall insulation and pre-empted the ‘Energiesprong’ concept of prefabricated retrofit, and Wilmcote House, the UK’s largest EnerPHit refurbishment project on site currently in Portsmouth. Cowan Eco Design will support Mark in securing and delivering such vital and transformational regeneration projects.
Throughout his career to date, Mark has also shared his passion and knowledge for the benefit of the profession including spending six years on the RIBA’s Sustainable Futures committee and a role as jury member for the International Passivhaus Awards. Currently he is on CIBSE’s Homes for the Future group and is a course tutor with the Retrofit Academy.
“Mark’s experience in his field is second-to-none and we can use his knowledge for the benefit of any building sector market”
say Managing Director, Phillip Mumford.
“Cowan Eco Design will offer our current and future clients opportunities for the development of more ecological living, Passivhaus or low carbon retrofit projects, which is where the future of building construction lies”.
“The recent publication Future Housing Design Trends 2015 from the RIBA witnessed that Passivhaus is emerging as a popular low energy standard for housing. As well as establishing new business opportunities, I’m keen to offer this progressive approach to current Cowan clients by demonstrating that they can offer a cost-efficient alternative approach in both residential and care home markets”.
