Ben Hopwood
Architectural Assistant
Joining Cowan Architects in 2023, Ben graduated from Plymouth University in 2022, taking time to travel to Ghana and Australia and helping build schools before seeking professional experience within the architecture industry. Ben’s role within Cowan Architects focuses on aiding senior team members across a variety of different scale projects. This allows him to work through multiple RIBA stages, digest as much information as possible and learn from others with excellent practical experience. This includes the likes of disability adaptation, residential projects and expert witness support.
Ben’s architectural passion focuses on designing for disaster, looking to aid people in war torn countries or those affected by natural disasters. Inspired by organisations like Habitat for Humanity and Open Architecture Collaborative, as well as the work of architects such as Shigeru Ban, Ben explores how design can help people rebuild both their structures and their lives. Ben’s passion in this field followed on from his work during his dissertation where he dissected the idea of Memoricide and Post-Traumatic Urbanism of Libraries, specifically pertaining to the role knowledge held within a community and its ability to act as an adhesive to the people in it.
Ben will continue this exploration of knowledge through the next two years as he starts his studies at the University of Cardiff for his master’s in architecture; here he will deploy all the skills he’s obtained during his time at Cowan Architects so far.
