Mark has been practising as an architect for 22 years, with considerable experience in low energy architecture and retrofit on a wide variety of award-winning projects. His interest in sustainable design stems from a combined architectural and engineering education at the University of Bath – he went on to develop his career at the London practices HLM Architects, ECD Architects and, latterly, as a Partner at Sustainable By Design LLP. He is an accredited European Passivhaus Designer and was UK jury member for the 2014 International Passivhaus Awards. Mark believes that the deep understanding of building physics and detailing rigour that Passivhaus training brings, coupled with an extensive knowledge of building materials and their environmental impacts, can bring great credibility to the design process. He was a committee member on the RIBA Sustainable Futures group for 6 years and continues to engage on RIBA matters relating to the retrofit agenda. He acts as an architect representative on CIBSE’s ‘Homes for the Future’ group and is a course tutor on ‘building fabric’ for the Retrofit Academy. He wrote the Institute for Sustainability’s guide on Improving the Building Fabric and writes articles regularly for architectural publications on sustainable design. Mark is a regular speaker at conferences, domestically and internationally, on retrofit and sustainable design generally. He is also one of the few thousand people in the world who can speak his native Cornish language, Kernewek!

After graduating he started his career at HLM Architects, where as a Project Architect he was responsible for a number of office and education projects, including Arundel Great Court HQ and conference building in The Strand and the University of Surrey’s School of Management. He joined ECD in 2001 where he was able to broaden his interest and experience in low carbon design, master planning and construction through projects such as Broadclose Farm in Cornwall which won the Richard Fielden Housing Design Award in 2007, and estate regeneration schemes in Tower Hamlets. He was designated Head of Sustainable Design in 2008 before joining sustainableBYdesign as Partner in 2013. As well as sustainable new build schemes, Mark is recognised for his work with previous architectural practices on ground-breaking social housing retrofit projects, including the Edward Woods estate, which features in the LSE study, ‘High Rise Hope’, Parkview Hub, which featured in the recent DCLG review into solid wall insulation and pre-empted the ‘Energiesprong’ concept of prefabricated retrofit, and Wilmcote House, the UK’s largest EnerPHit refurbishment project on site currently in Portsmouth.
